With William Smith – Welcome to My Inclusive Therapy Practice

👋🏻Hi, I’m Will (he/him) a gay allosexual cis man and BACP Accredited therapist specialising in working with lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer and questioning people.

I’m committed to providing an affirming and inclusive environment where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences without judgment.

My practice offers a welcoming space for individuals across the LGBTQ+ spectrum, including those questioning their identity or navigating the coming out process.

What is LGBTQ+ Therapy?

🏳️‍🌈LGBTQ+🏳️‍⚧️therapy is a specialised form of counselling that caters specifically to the unique experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning individuals.

This therapy focuses on issues related to identity, relationships, and wellbeing in the context of living as part of the LGBTQ+ community. It draws upon the principles of Gender, Sex and Relationship Diversity (GSRD) therapy.

Many individuals face societal pressures, discrimination, and family challenges, which can lead to stress, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. LGBTQ+ therapy provides a safe, non-judgemental space where you can openly discuss your feelings, experiences, and challenges with a therapist who understands the complexities of queer life.

1. Coming Out and Identity Exploration

Coming to terms with your identity or deciding when and how to come out can be a deeply personal and sometimes challenging experience. In LGBTQ+ therapy, you will be supported through:

  • Understanding your sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • Navigating the emotional process of coming out to friends, family, or at work.
  • Building self-acceptance and self-compassion throughout your journey.

2. Gender Identity and Transition Support

For trans and non-binary individuals, exploring gender identity and undergoing gender transition can be both affirming and emotionally complex. Therapy can help with:

  • Coping with gender dysphoria and body image issues.
  • Emotional support during social or medical transition.
  • Navigating family and social relationships post-gender affirmation
  • Understanding your gender identity and what it means for you.

3. Mental Health in the LGBTQ+ Community

The pressures of stigma, discrimination, and isolation can have a profound impact on mental health. LGBTQ+ individuals may face higher rates of:

  • Anxiety and depression (source).
  • Social anxiety, especially related to discrimination or fear of rejection.
  • Suicidal ideation or self-harm, which is more common among LGBTQ+ youth than the general population (source).
  • Therapy provides coping mechanisms and tools to help manage mental health challenges in a supportive environment.

4. LGBTQ+ Relationship Therapy

While LGBTQ+ individuals often share many relationship challenges common to all couples, there can be unique pressures within same-sex or queer relationships:

  • Navigating societal pressures and expectations.
  • Addressing relationship dynamics specific to LGBTQ+ couples.
  • Handling issues around communication, trust, and intimacy in the context of external stressors such as discrimination or family acceptance.
  • Exploring your sexual needs and desires, including pleasure, kinks and fetishes.

5. Healing from Trauma and Discrimination

Many LGBTQ+ individuals have faced trauma, either through personal experiences, such as rejection from family or community, or systemic challenges like homophobia or transphobia. LGBTQ+ therapy can help with:

  • Processing and healing from trauma related to identity.
  • Building resilience against societal discrimination and prejudice.
  • Creating healthy coping strategies for dealing with stress related to microaggressions or outright discrimination.

Recognising Microaggressions in Our Community

Any of these sound familiar? Click to reflect on why they’re problematic:

🤔“You don’t look trans/bi/queer/lesbian/gay.”
We know there’s no one way to “look” LGBTQ+. This statement perpetuates harmful stereotypes and can make people feel invalidated or pressured to conform to certain expectations.
👫“Which one of you is the man/woman in the relationship?”
This old chestnut imposes heteronormative roles on our relationships. We understand that our partnerships don’t need to follow traditional gender roles to be valid and fulfilling.
🩺“Have you had the surgery?”
Such an invasive and aggressive question! It reduces transgender individuals to their physical characteristics, ignoring the complexity and diversity of trans experiences.
“It’s just a phase.”
This dismissive statement invalidates our identities and experiences. We know our feelings are real, regardless of others’ opinions.
🚲“You’re bi? Just pick a side already!”
This comment erases bisexual identity and perpetuates harmful myths. Bisexuality is a valid, stable identity, not a transitional phase or a lack of decision-making.
